Le Fresnoy
ÉMILE COHL
Fantasmagorie, 1908

Frame by frame animation / 1’40’’

At the end of the 18th century, "phantasmagoria" were well-known attractions based on optical illusions, like magic lanterns, to provoke the appearance of ghosts. The film by Emile Cohl, which renders tribute to them, was shown moreover for the first time in a theatre. Understood to be the first cinematographic animation film, "Fantasmagorie" required about 700 drawings as each of them corresponded to one frame. Emile Cohl made them in Indian ink on white paper, and then used the negative.
