In, over & out is a short film in the tradition of Austrian structural cinema made up of a limited number of motifs, carefully planned, each of them shot simultaneously by 12 cameras from different periods. This configuration thus constitutes a journey in time through the history of the moving-image.
As the title indicates, my film is a homage to another film, the Lumière Brothers’ “Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory in Lyon,” which is considered one of the first “words” spoken by cinema. However, unlike those workers in 1895, today’s workers of “cognitive capitalism” leave the factory on their own.
I construct an analogy between the technological development of methods of image recording and socio-political developments since the last century, notably the individualisation of society, which is reflected in the composition of the digital image, made up of individual pixels.
