In Memories of Tartaria, a real-time VR experience, we delve into the depths of memory and cultural trauma. The Tatars, a Turkic ethnic group found primarily in Central Asia and Russia, have long lived without an independent state, their culture is slowly fading away. Enter Tartaria, a fantastical world conjured by a Tatar mother as a bedtime tale for her child. Through a blend of real archive photos and AI-generated imagery, the enigmatic world of Tartaria unfolds before our eyes. When cultural trauma fractures a society's narrative, storytelling emerges as a potent remedy, weaving together fragmented identities and nourishing our inner worlds with their spectral presence. Within the VR headset lies a liminal space, inviting us to reconcile the threads of cultural heritage.
