Amer Albarzawi was born in Damascus in 1987. He started his career in gymnastics, dance and performance. He worked with several theatre groups in Syria and abroad, which led him to participate in many festivals between 2005 and 2017, such as the "Danc- ing on the Edge" festival in the Netherlands, as well as others in countries such as France, Belgium, Qatar, Algeria and Lebanon. At the same time, he gradually developed his film practice and founded Majooneh, a group of young Syrian artists, with whom he directed Fade to Black, which won the Honourable Mention and Jury Prize at the Urban Film Festival in Toronto. In 2016, he directed Yaman, which was selected for several festivals, including the Annecy Film Festival. In his films he seeks to shed light on the reality of the lives of Syrians over the past decade. Amer arrived in France in 2017 for an eight-month artistic residency under the Nora Programme, and then entered the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs (ENSAD) as a member of the Guest Student Programme.
He is currently pursuing his filmmaking practice through the narratives of his personal experience of exile, isolation and amnesia.
